The Great Pyramid of Giza (The Pyramid of Keops (Cheops) (Khufu)

The Pyramids of Giza (in Egypt, near Cairo) were built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Pharaohs (during the years 2580 - 2560) and there are assigned to the pharaohs: Cheops (Khufu in original, Keops (Cheops) in Greek) (The Great Pyramid), Kefren (the son of Cheops) and Mikerinos (the grandson of Cheops).

In order to be ale to compare the three pyramids we need their heights: 148 m (Keops's pyramid), 143 m (Kefren's pyramid) and 66 m (Mikerinos's pyramid). The four faces of these pyramids are equal among themselves and they point to the four cardinal points.

The pyramids were built in Egypt at that time not only to keep the corpses of pharaohs, but also in order to overwhelme by their greatness, the people, the citizens of the empire. The prestige of pharaohs was high at that time, given that after extensive expeditions gripping, they conquered new territories, managed to acquire new wealth, became masters of a great mass of slaves.

We can say about the Great Pyramid that was completed around 2560 BC and it is assumed that for its construction over 100,000 people have worked during a 20 years period (2580-2560). There were used over 2,000,000 blocks of stone, each weighing approximately 2.5 tonnes. The transport of stone blocks was made by means of ramps, levers, rollers.
The ancient Egyptian ingenuity is highlighted by the fact that the limestone blocks were set so closely towards one another that between them one could not even bring a piece of paper.

The pyramid was covered with white stone, perfectly polished and the pyramid shined brightly in the sunlight. Unfortunately, today one can still see only a few blocks of limestone.

Viewed from a distance of several kilometers, the Great Pyramid has the appearance of a geometric body with flat faces, straight edges and sharp tip. But as the viewer approaches, he founds that faces are made of high steps, that the edges are not straight and instead of sharp peak there can be seen a platform (currently the Great Pyramid lacks its peak).

Impressive is the weight of the Great Pyramid of Giza which weighs 6 million tonnes.

The entrance to the pyramid is 15 metres above the base. Above the entrance is an inscription in French that recalls the French expedition in Egypt (1799-1801).

The Great Pyramid, one of the oldest architectural works, impresses even today by its hyperbolic dimensions and it can be considered as the most representative monument of the Ancient Egypt.

************************************************************************************************

The records about the wonders of the world remained for posterity, but actually, from what we call "The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World", only one currently exists. It is the Great Pyramid of Keops, an wonderful edifice of the ancient world, majestic monument that has managed to withstand several millennia and which certainly will last into eternity.
